The
Roxburgh flock of Dorpers was established by Joan Elliot in 2004.
With a continuing reduction in labour on today’s farms, Joan felt
that the easy care characteristics of the Dorper could offer great
benefit to UK sheep farmers. The original stock came to Scotland
in the form of embryos from New Zealand and now the flock consists
of over 30 females. The objective of the flock is to breed a top
quality meat sheep which requires minimal attention from birth to
slaughter.
The Dorper is a sheep similar in size and shape to a Texel. They
have a mainly hair coat that moults in the summer, therefore, do
not need clipping or crutching. The Dorper due to its coat has a
reduced risk of fly strike and has a very high natural resistance
to internal and external parasites.
The Dorper is a highly prolific and maternal female capable of year
round lambing and has the ability to produce two crops of lambs
in one calendar year.
The lambs are extremely vigorous at birth and finish quickly off
their mothers with excellent weight and conformation.
